Big Sky Conference on Discrete Mathematics: Rafting Page

About the Raft Trip

We have selected a local classic, the ``Alberton Gorge''. About 40 minutes from Missoula, this awesome stretch of the Clark Fork (of the Columbia drainage system) boasts approximately five class III+ rapids, numerous other exciting stretches and beautiful scenery the entire way.

We arrange the trip through the Outdoor Program at the University of Montana. Check out their homepage, where you will find various other links, such as Missoula's Whitewater Central

Specifics

COST: $38 (approximately)
Please make your payment separately at conference check-in. If you write a check, you can make it out to the UM.

WHEN/WHERE
Immediately after the talks end on Saturday, we'll meet and car pool to the put-in sight (exit Cyr on I-90, about 35 miles from Missoula). We may complete the float close to dark (about 8pm). The take-out is at exit Tarkio on I-90. From there, we'll shuttle back to our cars and finally drive back to Missoula.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING ON THE RIVER
I like to wear river shorts (quick drying) or a bathing suit, a synthetic short-sleeved shirt, a (tight-fitting) hat, and foot protection, such as river sandals or neoprene ``booties'' (old running shoes are fine, too). If you wear glasses or sun glasses, make sure to bring croakies. Sunscreen is essential on sunny days. Avoid cotton clothing (once it's wet, it chills). Wool works well, but can be scratchy. I find a (full) water bottle handy.

If the air temperature around Missoula drops into the 60's, then you should prepare for colder weather on the river. That means bringing the following extra items: long-sleeved synthetic shirt; fleece jacket or other synthetic upper; wool socks; hat or headband; wool mittens (if your hands get cold easily).  It has been chilly some years, but no one seems to complain.

FYI
Of course, life jackets will be provided. If necessary, waterproof paddle jackets will also be available. These are long-sleeved. This is not a river requiring helmet use for rafters. The water is cool, but certainly ``swimable'' on a warm day, and there ARE some swimming opportunities.

OTHER CLOTHING
Plan to bring a small bag with a set of dry clothes for the take-out. In it, you will probably want a towel, sweat shirt, long pants (like sweat pants), footwear, jacket, and maybe a snack including a drink.

LUNCHES
We'll bring a cooler along on the river. It is a long enough float that it is nice to stop for lunch, or at least have something to eat in the boats. Packed lunches will be available for those who request; see the ``Lunch Order Form'' in your conference pack. If you wish to take care of yourself, that is also fine. Just keep in mind that there won't be much time between the talks and the time we need to hit the road. So I recommend ordering a lunch on the packet form.
