Non-mathematical Stuff
Home
During the summer and fall of 2004 and the early winter of 2005, my brother and I built the house where I now live in Missoula. The only things we didn't do were the excavation, carpet and gutters. It was brutal. If you'd like to learn about it and see some pictures, check out this journal entry.
Land
We are lucky enough to own some land on the Dearborne River, between the Missouri River and Highway 200, near Wolf Creek, Montana. For some pictures see here.
Travel
Starting August 1, 2006, my family and I lived in Helsinki, Finland for one year. During that time, I wrote an electronic weekly journal. They can all be found here. I also wrote articles about my year in Finland for the UM Math Department newsletter (download Spring 2007 issue here) and the UM Office of International Programs newsletter "Expanding Horizons" (download September 2007 here).
In the summer of 2010, Jen and I took a trip to Italy. I had a conference in Pisa, and we took advantage and tagged on a trip together. It was a wonderful time. I had meant to journal about each of the places we visited (Rome, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Florence), but only the Cinque Terre leg of the journey got written up PDF.
Starting in August 2010, my family and I lived in Dunedin, New Zealand. During that time, until I left in June 2011, I wrote an electronic weekly journal. They can all be found here, as well as at my blog.
Adventure
My family and I love to ski. Our hill of choice trough the 2009-10 season was Discovery near Anaconda, Montana, where we had season passes for several years. We decided to make the switch to Snowbowl in 2011, though our love for Disco remains undiminished. Here's a skiing blurb for the 2007-08 season PDF, one for the 2008-09 season PDF, and one for the 2009-10 season PDF, no skiing 2010-11 while we lived in New Zealand.

Trips with Dave Sumner: our trips include a winter ski trip in the Oregon Cascades in the winter of 1999, the Sawtooth Wilderness in Idaho in the summers of 2001 and 2005 (pictures), the Dark Canyon of the Colorado River in southern Utah in the summer of 2002, the Eagle Cap Wilderness in Oregon in the summer of 2006 and 2008 (PDF Journal), and our epic traverse of Utah's Uinta Mountains in the summer of 2009 (PDF Journal).
In March of 2007, I participated in the Rajalta Rajelle-hiihto, which is translated from Finnish as "from border to border cross country ski". The route was over 400 kilometers, or 250 miles, from the Russian to the Swedish border across Finland, and we skied it over 7 days. It was a truely great trip. For more detail on my experience see PDF.
In the summer of 2005, I ran the Bridger Ridge Run, which I highly recommend if you're in to that kind of thing.
In the summer of 2009, I raced in the Butte 50, an awesome marathon mountain bike event that I whole heartedly recommend; see my journal entry about the event. I did the race again in 2010, trained even harder for it, and did well, though I think better during-race nutrition and not moving abroad a few days later could result in a better performance.
